AYURVEDIC WELLNESS

AYURVEDA
An ancient science, ayurveda is one of the oldest comprehensive systems of medicine in the world and flourished from around 7000 BCE to 1900 BCE. Ayurveda is often thought of as the sister science to yoga and it is referred to as "the mother of all healing", it is a system of healing from India that uses food, spices, herbal therapies, bodywork, and lifestyle changes to create the conditions of optimal health.
Ayurveda teaches us that the earth relates to the five elements of earth, water, fire, air and ether. It also teaches us that there are 20 qualitites or gunas used to describe all matter;
Heavy - Light
Slow (Dull) - Sharp (Penetrating)
Cold - Hot
Oily - Dry
Smooth - Rough
Dense - Liquid
Soft - Hard
Stable - Mobile
Gross - Subtle
Cloudy (Sticky) - Clear
In ayurveda, like increases like while opposites balance. Balance, or sattva is key to ayurvedic healing.
There are the three doshas (bodily constitutions, our prakriti): vata, pitta, and kapha. The doshas, or some combination of them, can be identified in various seasons, climates, landscapes, activities, plants, and human beings. Each of them embodies a combination of elements and qualities. All three doshas are present in everyone, but the ratio between them varies between individuals. Largely everyone fits under a single dosha or a dual dosha and ayurveda encourages us to adapt our daily routines and nutritional intake based on our constitution. When working with clients, I do of thorough assessment to identify their prakriti, however, you can also take a quick quiz here to see which dosha you fall under. When our dosha is out of balance, we may experience disease or bodily/mental irritations. An ayurvedic lifestyle prevents disease from manifesting in our bodies, it nourishes us from within by balancing nutritional needs and by combining certain foods for optimal nutrient absorption.
